This unique historic gem in Amfissa, the former Salona, is a unique example of late 18th-century architecture in Greece. It has been preserved and altered after the Greek Revolution but remains inhabited today, maintaining its original character. This two-story stone building features a tiled roof, an external vaulted stone staircase, and a wooden balcony on its southeast side. It includes high-ceilinged rooms with two fireplaces, wooden floors, and a basement for storing food items. Surrounded by a 2.5-acre garden with various plants, it was originally intended for a high-ranking Ottoman official, the Voivode of Salona.
Notable features include intricate carvings, including a coat of arms and a crescent moon decoration on a stone column, reflecting Ottoman heritage. The building is located in the old aristocratic neighborhood "Marmara" in Amfissa and was taken over after liberation by a local leader, Priest Kostas Jamalas.
Unlike many other buildings, this house largely survived the turbulent times of the Revolution. Amfissa was liberated in 1821 but experienced several recaptures and destructions during the Greek Civil War. Despite these challenges, the building remained intact and was acquired by the Papathanasiou family in 1934. Today, it is a restored historical monument protected by the Ministry of Culture.
The house has a total area of 350 square meters, with a kitchen, bathroom, large living room, two bedrooms, and a hallway on the first floor. The ground floor contains a separate apartment and a large space currently used for storage. There is also an old stable and a small, under-construction dwelling that is also used for storage, as well as a functional water well.
